The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ebenezer Oduro Owusu, has received a delegation from the College of Engineering of the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (VirginiaTech) in the USA. The meeting focused on strengthening existing ties by exploring academic partnerships, particularly in the areas of engineering and material sciences, among other science programmes.
The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ebenezer Oduro Owusu, in welcoming the delegation said that he was confident that the partnership would enhance the teaching and learning of engineering programmes in both universities and equip graduates with global perspectives that would enable them to compete globally and to solve global problems.
Mrs. Glenda Scales, Associate Dean and Global Engagement and Chief Technology Officer of VirginiaTech, in her remarks called for strategic initiatives to be deployed by both universities to consolidate efforts at resolving challenges associated with climate change, energy, water, and food security. She emphasized capacity-building and exchange programmes as crucial in training students and faculty to become globally and culturally competent engineers. She underscored the importance of engaging corporate organizations and foundations to help fund substantial projects.
The Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Academic and Student Affairs, Prof. Kwame Offei, noted that the partnership with VirginiaTech is a step in the right direction, considering that the University of Ghana is also keen on research. He said that this is usually complemented through staff and student exchanges. He emphasized the commitment of University Management to support and ensure that the collaboration becomes mutually beneficial.
Present at the meeting were Johan E. Foster, Associate Professor of Material Science and Engineering at VirginiaTech; Alex O. Aning, Associate Professor of Material Science and Engineering at VirginiaTech. Those from the University of Ghana were Prof. Boateng Onwona-Agyeman, Dean, School of Engineering Sciences, Ms. Jennifer Amponsah, School Administrator, School of Engineering Sciences, and Mr. Emmanuel Baidoo, College Secretary, College of Basic and Applied Sciences.
