Mr. John Owusu Sarpong has been elected Speaker of the General Assembly (G.A) of the Students’ Representative Council (SRC) of the University of Ghana.
Mr. Sarpong garnered 82 votes out a total of 117 to become the leader of the highest decision making body of the University of Ghana SRC for the 2016/2017 academic year. His closest contender, Ms. Serwaa Kuffor managed to pull 29 of the total votes whilst David Johnson managed to amass 6.
As Speaker he shall preside over meetings of the General Assembly to deliberate on general policies referred to it by the Executive Committee of the SRC and other issues bothering on the students’ welfare and interest in the University.
Mr. Sarpong assured members of the house of a firm and fair leadership for the next one year. He said he will see to it that the conditions of the G.A members are improved during his tenure as well as make judicious use of time whenever there is General Assembly meeting which many at times eats late into the night.
“G.A members deserve more. I have been a G.A member before and I know how it feels to come for meetings at 8pm and close as late as 4am when we know that the halls of residence close their gates at midnight. I assure you that I’m going to be time conscious in all our deliberations without necessarily preventing honourable members from expressing their views on issues affecting their own interest.” Mr. Sarpong said.
Prior to his election, Mr. John Sarpong was the Deputy Electoral Commissioner and General Assembly member of the Elizabeth Francis Sey Hall. He once contested for Junior Common Room (JCR) President which he narrowly lost to Mr. Richmond Sam-Quarm.
He is level 400 Political Science student of the University and a Fashion Designer by profession.
He was sworn into office by the Chief Justice, Gregory Asiedu right after the declaration of the results by the Electoral Commissioner.
Meanwhile Mr. Isaac Dzamesi was elected as Deputy Speaker of the General Assembly whilst Ms. Grace Abena Mensah was appointed Clerk by the Speaker in consultation with his Deputy and approved by the General Assembly.
Members of the General Assembly including JCR Executives, Accra City Campus, Distance Education and the Main SRC Executives as well as Committee Heads were also sworn-in by the Chief Justice.
