The Deputy Public Relations Officer of the Unemployed Graduate Nurses Association, Mr. Mohammed Mustapha Forson has warned that the association shall picket the premises of the Ministry of Health on Wednesday, September 14th as a result of the government’s neglect of the graduate nurses.
Speaking exclusively to Univers News on Tuesday, Mr. Forson explained that government’s inability to absorb the graduates into the health sector has rendered its members dissatisfied and helpless. He further added that despite their acquisition of legitimate document and criteria for the securing of employment, the Ministry seems not to have developed any interests in their concerns.
“The last time government was doing recruitment, they asked potential employees to come and buy forms but we [graduate nurses from universities] were quickly barred from buying the forms, we were told that plans will be made for us later. But as at now, there’s nothing yet. We engaged the ministry of health and they are dragging their feet on the matter. When you go there the next thing they tell you is, they are seeking for clearance from the Ministry of Finance”, he said.
The Public Relations Officer also hinted that further measures shall be employed, including the possible petitioning of the World Health Organization, if the Ministry should turn a deaf ear to their plea.
“We may demonstrate, we may consider petitioning some other agencies including, probably the World Health Organization. They are concerned about the health of all member countries under the UN and we are sure that if they are made aware of this situation, they will also take an interest in the matter”, he added.
This unfortunate development, Mr. Forson said, has rendered over 700 trained nurses jobless despite the discouraging nurse-patient ratio the country is currently facing.
