Renowned educationist and author, Anis Haffer has called on government to make the education system functional to ensure the development of the society. He made this assertion at the maiden edition of the Annual MOBA Engagement Series at the British Council here in Accra on Thursday. The educationist explained the judicious utilization of time coupled with the adoption of technological advancement, leaves no room for retrogression in the education sector. The event further saw Mr. Haffer further advice stakeholders in universities in the country to be business- oriented in order to match up with heightened competition across the globe.
“The education at the end of the day has to be functional. These days with internet facilities there’s no information under the sun that is unavailable. So the bigger question is, what do we do with the information that we have. We have great natural resources but how do we add value to what we have. We have to address also the traditional universities and begin to look at other universities that are coming in that are uncommon. Because they are not interested in academics, not that their academics are not good, but there is enough of that. How do we develop ourselves where we become business people or entrepreneurs for a developing country”, he said.
Speaking at the same event, Senior Partner at the Fidelity Law Group, Dr. Josiah Cobbah requested for a paradigm shift in the mindset of Ghanaians towards education in the country. His comments come on the back of reports from industry personnel on the alarming increase in the lack of functional skills on the part of graduates required for the job market. According to him, education must transcend the borders of the classroom to equip students with the much need skills to practically solve problems facing the nation.
“I will invite young people to begin to change their mindset about education, it is not so much about the certificate as it is about what happens to you when you are in the classroom during the three or four years that you spend in the university or polytechnic. You need to think about what product you have become. Do you come out a person who has a good degree in physics but then you go around with you CV and nobody wants to employ you”, he added.
The event was themed, “Advancing Ghana’s progress through effective professionalism, thinking and looking ahead”.
