Director of Institute of Statistical, Social and Economic Research ( ISSER), Professor Felix Asante has expressed worry over the decline of student performance in the West African Secondary School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) specifically Mathematics and Science since 2012, adding that there is a large disparity between the high performing well-endowed schools and poor performance of deprived schools.
He made these observations whiles delivering the State of the Ghanaian Economy Report, 2015 at the ISSER conference Centre at the University of Ghana.
Speaking at the conference, he noted that, students at the basic level were more inclined to be enrolled in private institutions which had conducive facilities and had consistent checks on students. He however quizzed the ability of public secondary schools to perform better, when compared to their counterparts in private secondary schools.
He further expressed concern in the enrolment of Ghanaian Universities which have gone up from under 10,000 students in Ghana’s three public universities in 1987 to 400,000 by 2015.
“There was an astronomical increase of 316% in enrolment in researched master’s degrees in public universities following National Accreditation Board’s specification that the minimum qualification one needs in order to teach in a tertiary institution is a researched master’s degree”, he said.
The forum was chaired by Professor Ebenezer Oduro Owusu , Vice Chancellor of the University of Ghana.
Other dignitaries present at the forum included Prof. Ivan Addae Mensah, (former Vice Chancellor of the University of Ghana), Prof. Agyei Mensah, (provost of the college of humanities), Dr. Charles G. Ackah,( head of Economics division, ISSER)
