Below is the Full Speech delivered by the President on the Floor of General Assembly on Friday September 9, 2016.

WELCOME ADDRESS AND STAY-IN REPORT BY THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNIVERSITY OF GHANA STUDENTS’ REPRESENTATION COUNCIL DELIVERED BY ESINAM AFI SEADE

Mr. Speaker, executive committee members of the Students’ Representative Council, Honourable General Assembly Members, Noble observers, members of the media, ladies and gentlemen.

The call to stewardship was responded to by myself and my three other able executives on the 23rd of May 2016 and today we have, as a team, satisfactorily performed our duties to the best interest of the entire students population.

ADMISTRATION

Our main duties took effect from the long summer vacation which saw a number of developments in the student affairs.

Issues concerning utility bills were the most discussed and it came with agitations from students.

The SRC held a press conference to that effect and successfully caught the attention of the stakeholders involved. As we speak ladies and gentlemen, University of Ghana students are the only students in Ghana who are waived off the utility tariffs in Ghana and even tried extending helping hands to other student leaders. A section of the executives paid courtesy calls to some reputable and familiar leaders in government which yielded into the creation of great relationships.

We agreed to enter into a memorandum of understanding with the Association of Ghana Industries on possibilities of scouting for final year students projects’ and recommending them to the industries.

We were successful in negotiating on behalf of students for the slashing of the modality of school fees payment which had been 70/30 in the past academic years. We managed to get the school go against their initial plan and allowing students to pay 60/40 as regular students and 50/50 for fee paying students. We were able to defray certain debt incurred by the distance education students’ leadership that was supposed to have been taken care of in the previous administration. This had to be done in order to support the smooth running of the new Esinam led administration and its good ties with the other wing leadership from other campuses.

As the leader of the USAG delegation, I brought together all students who were fit to be delegates for the congress which was hosted in Kesseben University College from the 17th to 20th of August 2016.

Mr. Speaker, the University of Ghana SRC is proud to announce that our student leadership was the only one in Ghana to be involved in the AFRICAN UNION COMMISSION’S Regional dialogue on promoting human rights with special attention on the right of women.

I was privileged to be the one to chosen as the only students’ leader to add up to the deliberations on behalf of all students in the West African sub region.

As a way of giving back to society Mr. Speaker, a section of some acting committee heads visited Keta Senior High School during the vacation to mentor the young ones who always look up to experienced students’ leaders like us for inspiration.

We were able to establish good relationship with young people and gave them the opportunity to fall back on us when they felt the need to.

We were invited by the alumni association to meet with the alumni council for an in house discussion together with all JCR presidents, Accra City campus president and distance education president. In this meeting, Mr. Speaker, we were advised to disseminate information concerning the intended alumni membership the association would want to introduce with me.

We commenced the biometric birth certificate registration as well as the passport registration due to the high demand for it and we recorded over a thousand students registering.

The Dare to Start challenge had kick started with massive participation and patronage from a diverse batch of students with different and brilliant ideas on entrepreneurial initiatives. As we speak, a host of them are being taken through series of training and in a couple of weeks a winning team will walk away with GHC 15,000 as cash prize among other fantastic benefits.

PROSPECTIVE PROJECTS AND PROGRAMMES

Mr. Speaker if I am allowed, I will enumerate a few of the proposed projects and programs that the SRC which in real sense is more of all of your honorable members that me and the three other executives would want to work on.

The SRC has huge ambitions, lots we can work on and achieve in the year of our tenure. However, the line is clearly drawn between what the executives can do with their strength and what we can do collectively. Ladies and Gentlemen, this is where our beckon calls.

Collectively we can achieve so much as an SRC. The antidote will be that we all grow hearts that will feel what I may be feeling, eyes that will see beyond the dark
