Confusion Rocks USAG Congress Over Composition of EC – Radio Univers 105.7 | Voice of Legon

The Last senate meeting of the out-going University Students Association of Ghana, (USAG) President Henry Nkosuo Boakye’s administration  in the on-going USAG delegate congress at the Kessben University College in Kumasi came to an abrupt end after a disagreement ensued between delegates at the congress over the composition of the electoral commission, It took the intervention of the district police of the Kutinase to restore peace at the congress grounds.

During the senate meeting, most of the delegates opposed the nomination of some individuals ‘appointed’ by the USAG President to constitute the electoral commission.

The nomination of Eugene Addai, Richmond Asare Tinkaro, Gideon Amankwaah, George Sarpong and Kobby Amoah as members of the USAG electoral commission met fierce resistance, by some angry delegates for allegedly being partisan.

Some aggrieved delegates who spoke to Univers News’ Hanson Agyemang, explained that the process for the selection of the USAG electoral commission was not free and fair.

They further mentioned that the executives of USAG had already selected their preferred members and only called for the senate meeting to make it formal.

However, the University of Ghana Student’s Representative Council local National Union of Ghana Student’s President, Derrick Abostsi explained that USAG President Henry Nkosuo Boakye did not follow due process in the make up of the electoral commission and ignored all calls by some delegates who opposed his decisions.

According to him, the USAG President Henry Nkosuo Boakye deliberately called delegates who were in bed with his administration to make ‘biased’ nominations during the senate meeting.

Meanwhile information reaching Univers News indicates that the vetting committee for the 16th Annual USAG delegates Congress also failed to provide the vetting results of candidates vying for various positions in USAG.

According to the the vetting panel, they have not been fully paid for their service during the vetting process, hence their inability to be properly motivated to work.

The President of USAG however blamed the cause of the non payment of members of the vetting panel to the failure of member institutions to make payment of their capitation and dues to the Association.

He however, revealed that plans have been put in place to ensure that an amicable solution is reached, in order to enable the vetting panel to successfully complete the vetting process.

The16th University Students Association of Ghana  annual congress is currently on-going at the Kessben University College in Kumasi in the Ashanti Region. The congress seeks to provide the platform for stakeholders to deliberate on a lasting solution to the recurrent issue of who pays for the utilities bills in our tertiary institutions.

In the past few years most students union congress has been characterized by chaos and violence, because it is widely believed that most student leaders are sponsored by major political parties in the country.

Univers News’ Hanson Agyemang is following at the congress grounds in the Kessben University College Kumasi and is following the issues there closely.
