Greater Accra SHS SRC Convene To Deliberate On ICT Promotion – Radio Univers 105.7 | Voice of Legon

Several senior high schools in the the Greater Accra region convened at the Accra Academy Senior High School on Tues, August 23 2016 for the 31st annual congress of the Greater Accra Region Students’ Representative Council (GARSRC).

The congress themed, ‘The Role of SRC in the promotion of ICT in Second Cycle Education’ saw the attendance the chief of Ngleshi Amanfro, Nii Kwashie Gborlor IV, the Greater Accra regional minister, Nii Laryea Afotey Agbo including several high ranking persons in the educational sector.

At the congress, the students deliberated on issues affecting them and came up with how best the outlined problems could be tackled.

In his address, the GAR minister stressed enough the need for students to “stay focused, ignore the noise and the success will come.”  Hon. Agbo also urged students to be disciplined, genuine, selfless in their service to Ghana, reminding them of the inevitable fact that they are the future leaders.

He emphasized the need for the youth to build good and strong characters that will enable them purge the nation, and the world at large of vices that account for the suffering of the masses and destruction.

In lieu of this, Hon. Agbo further noted his intentions to advocate for the institution of a system where university graduates will serve 6 months under military training as part of their national service. This he believed will heighten discipline, thereby eliminating social vices, especially corruption.

The Member of Parliament for Mampong, Hon. Francis Addai-Nimoh was also present and he addressed the gathering. He charged students to make good use of the internet instead of using it for fraudulent and unhealthy activities.

He charged the students to dare to be technology giants like Facebook CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, Apple’s Steve Jobs among others.

Mrs. Millicient Asare, the regional president for the College of Humanties, Arts and Social Sciences (CHASS) also noted that effective next academic year, e-learning will be incorporated in teaching  and learning to deepen students’ understanding of ICT while equipping them will necessary skills for the global market.

She also reiterated the Mampong MP’s concerns for the students to be self-disciplined in using the internet.

“…these days, parents will not have all the time to monitor how you use the internet but you should be able to discipline yourself. Do not use it for sakawa (fraud) and pornography. Instead, you can use the internet to make money.”

Dr. Ebenezer Owusu, a senior lecturer at the University of Ghana’s Botany Department also in his speech challenged students to take initiatives in organizing ICT-centered programs that will create an avenue for the exchange and exhibition of skills and knowledge. By so doing, ICT will be revolutionized and many jobs will be created for the ghanaian population.

Consequently, the nation will be able to compete globally in the technological world.

He further added that students should not hesitate in seeking funds from government to translate their initiatives into reality.

Nii Kwashie Gborlor IV and Hon. Nii Laryea Afotey Agbo gave gifts in monetary terms of Ghc500 and Ghc2,000 respectively to the congress.
