“EC’s GHc50,000 Filing Fee Is A Disaster” – GCPP – Radio Univers 105.7 | Voice of Legon

The presidential nominee of the Great Consolidated People’s Party(GCPP), Dr Henry Herbert

Lartey has described the increase in the presidential filing fee by the Electoral Commission as a

disaster.

Speaking in an exclusive to Univers news, Dr. Henry Herbert Lartey stated that the increase in the

filling fees is a way of blocking smaller parties from taking part in the electioneering process.

The GCPP flagbearer said that this decision is portraying politics as something that is

exclusive to the wealthy. He added that this decision will cause agitation among the youth who

have aspirations to engage in politics thus leading to anger among the youth which can

eventually result in violence.

He further cited that the former president of Ghana, Osagyefo

Kwame Nkrumah would have not have been able to be president if the presidential fee was

pegged at such astronomical prices.

“…you are trying to say that those who have money are the only people who can go into politics.

If the youth find out that they cannot compete, they will turn to violence and national security

will be at risk. The Electoral Commission, is that what we want? Do we want to ostracize

ordinary Ghanaians not being able to be parliamentarians and not being able to go and become

presidents? Sure that’s not the case, if that’s the case, Obama would not have been president of

the United States of America, Kwame Nkrumah would never have been president of Ghana.

Kwame Nkrumah had no money, I don’t think Nkrumah paid GHȻ 50,000 to be president of

Ghana.”

The Electoral Commission of Ghana has increased the presidential and parliamentary filing fees

from GHȻ10,000 to GHȻ 50,000 and GHȻ1,000 to GHȻ 10,000 respectively.
