The University of Ghana has officially received a decommissioned aircraft from the Ghana Air Force as part of plans to establish a Department of Aeronautic and Space Technology under the school of Engineering Sciences at the University.
The aircraft (Aermacchi MB-339 jet) will serve as instrumental equipment for the practical training of students as well as further push the frontiers of both civil and military aviation engineering in Ghana.
Speaking at the handing-over ceremony the Vice Chancellor of the University of Ghana, Professor Ebenezer Oduro Owusu said with the arrival of the aircraft to the university, it is imperative for the School of Engineering Sciences to fast-track ongoing discussion with relevant stakeholders in the aviation industry as well as solicit for approval and accreditation.
Professor Oduro Owusu was optimistic that the University will be prepared to enroll students onto the programme during the 2017/2018 academic year.
The Vice Chancellor also assured the Ghana Armed Force Training School of the university’s readiness in assisting it to develop and acquire accreditation of its curriculum.
In an address read on behalf of the Chief of Defence Staff, Air Marshal Michael Samson-Oje enumerated a number of benefits that will accrue to both the University of Ghana and the Ghana Air Force based on the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU).
Among the benefits he cited include industrial placement for graduates, exchange of Faculties to build relevant capacities as well as enrich course content of both schools.
He also indicated that the MOU will enhance professionalism of the Engineering corps of the Ghana Air Force through internationally recognized but locally-available certification programmes.
