“Foreign Child Beggars In Accra Are Child Laborers “ – Radio Univers 105.7 | Voice of Legon

The president of the Ghana coalition of the rights of the child, Mrs. Josephine Kudah, has described the practice of foreign children begging on the streets in Accra as constituting child labor. She decried the prevalence of child labor in the country and further noted that child labor does not speak well of a country that is striving to attain development.

Speaking on Radio Univers’ Labor Front, she affirmed that irrespective of their non-Ghanaian status, the laws of Ghana apply to all individuals found within the borders of Ghana and as such there was the need to consider the impacts foreign beggars hold on Ghana’s social reputation.

“They are not Ghanaians, but once they are in Ghana, they are expected to conform to the laws of Ghana. Therefore once you start talking about child labor in Ghana, you must also talk about what these foreigners do in the country”, she stressed.

Mrs. Josephine Kudah further noted that it was necessary to intensify the fight against child labor in order to completely eradicate the menace, adding that it was wrong to assume children don’t have rights. She condemned the practice where individuals and people in position overlook the rights children enjoy but quickly added that it is necessary to make children aware that their rights are not a license to be insolent.

Her comments come in the spirit of the incoming World Day Celebration against Child Labor which is scheduled to be held on 12th June, 2016. The commemoration is being held under the theme, “End child labor in supply chains – It’s everyone’s business!”
