Momentum is building up following the launch of an online campaign to demand the reduction of 2016/2017 academic year fees for students of .
A new schedule of fees published on the University’s website earlier this week showed fees had been increased by about 30%.
The average student will be expected to pay about GHc 1,100 from about GHc 800 paid last academic year.
In the light of collective disgruntlement, an online petition has been launched by a concerned student studying Chemical Engineering, Samuel Gyekye Mensah, against the increment.
The petition states that: “The student body is indeed saddened over the current fee schedules for 2016/2017 academic year with its accompanied brouhaha, which has as well acclaimed to itself not less than an average 300ghc increment. Basically on this issue do we address your office, entrusting our hopes in you to come out with a word followed with actions to help reduce it immediately.”
Social media monitoring reveal the development has angered many students.
Most of the students are challenging the introduction of certain components of their fees which accounts for the increase.
They cited, a sharp increase of the Field trip (College of Engineering) amount from a GHc 30 to GHc 100.
Others are, an amount of GHc 200 as ‘practical fee’ added to the bill of students of Colleges of Sciences, Engineering and Agriculture & Natural Resource.
A technology service fee of GHc 200 has also been introduced.
Other charges being interrogated by the students are, GHc 60 as heath care fee, GHc 35 ‘student integration’, GHc 50 for as paperless communication fee among others.
The students say “the fees are undoubtedly raised beyond level while some remains questionable and ghost nature since they are never felt through out our stay on campus.”
So far, over 260 students have signed the online petition which will be delivered to President John Mahama, the school’s Vice Chancellor, Prof. Kwasi Obiri Danso and Dean of Students, Dr Kofi Owusu-Daaku.
Copies will also be served to the heads of the Provosts of the various colleges.
