Anas’ Award Is Not Contempt Of Court- Lawyer Tetteh Wayo – Radio Univers 105.7 | Voice of Legon

Legal Practitioner, Tetteh Wayo has jumped to the defence of the Ghana Journalist Association for awarding ace investigative journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas as journalist of the year 2015, stating that the award is not contemptuous of the Supreme Court.

In 2015 Anas Aremeyaw Anas released a shocking undercover investigations report on corruption in Ghana’s judiciary. Justice Paul Uter Derry one of the twelve high court judges implicated in the judicial scandal has since been is in court challenging the legality of the expose and the public showing of the video. But shortly after the announcement of Anas as journalist of the year, Lawyer of Justice Paul Uter Derry, Nii Kpakpo Addo in an interview with sister station Joy fm condemned the Ghana Journalist Association and called the award of Anas, a contempt of court.

‘’The Supreme Court of this country has stated that the action of Anas Aremeyaw Anas and Tiger Eye are unlawful in respect of showing the said video to the general public. Secondly there are ongoing court proceedings and you still go ahead and say you are awarding the person. It is wrong. It is actually in contempt of court” , he said.

However speaking on Campus Exclusive Legal practitioner Tetteh Wayo challenged the grounds of the contempt allegations and in a sharp rebuttal explained that the claims were misplaced.

”If Anas has come up with an expose and his association feels like, fine, we want to award him where is the contempt? The procedure GJA uses to award it’s members does not lie in the mouth of the judiciary or the executive or the legislature’’ he added.

He also stated that while the mode of getting information was unorthodox or unacceptable, the end results is what matters and that those who argue entrapment should go and prove it open court.
