NGO Advocates Empowerment Of Civil Society Organisations – Radio Univers 105.7 | Voice of Legon

Watershed, a local NGO has called for the empowerment of citizens and civil society organisations (CSOs), toward the achievement of universal access to Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) by 2030.

Addressing a workshop in Accra on Thursday, Mr Mohammed Abdul Nashiru, Development Consultant of KINAJ Consulting Services in Accra, said the Watershed company aims to provide WASH services across the nation.

He said the programme seeks to support the global efforts in fulfilling the rights to water and sanitation as well as the distribution of water resources equitably and sustainably.

Watershed, which is a strategic partnership between the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs and other groups also, aims at achieving universal access to WASH.

The company is expected to work in six countries over the next five years.

Mr Nashiru added that the workshop was organised to advocate the empowerment of citizens and CSOs to play critical roles in the realisation of the five- year programme.

He noted that some institutions including the UNICEF, Ministry of Water Resources, Works and Housing, Coalition of NGOs in Water and Sanitation, Wash Journalists Network, Ghana Wash Alliance and Water Resources Commission, were identified to play significant roles in the achievement of the goals.

He said in the efforts to achieve universal access to water, sanitation and hygiene and water resources management across the country, the company had sometimes been confronted with some problems.

These include; financing of certain projects, pollution of water bodies, limited capacity of water resources management structures, ineffectiveness of certain Water, Sanitation, Management Teams and blatant abuse of work lands through ‘galamsey’ (illegal small scale mining) and others.

He added that even though operational areas for the programme had not yet been finalised certain areas such as the various ministries and their departments could be targeted.
