Public relations officer of the Department of the Accounting Students Association (DASA) at the University of Professional Studies Accra (UPSA) Mr. Arhinful Ernest together with some student course departmental heads have come together to form a makeshift electoral commission to oversee a successful Student’s Representative Council election for the school.
According to Mr. Ernest Arhinful, UPSA students now depend on the executives of the Department of Accounting Students Association to perform duties otherwise performed by the SRC.
He further revealed that Management of the University has imposed the payment of the Utility bills on students due to the inability of the students to negotiate with management of the University through a coordinated and legitimate student’s union council.
Speaking in an interview on Radio Univers morning show Campus Exclusive, Mr. Arhinful said the makeshift committee had also being tasked to set up a dispute resolution committee as a means to deal with issues that might arise from the elections.
“We are meeting as a body to represent the interest of the school, all the executives of course departments came together and set an EC for which only the departments President came together to form an EC and their mandate is to draw the modalities concerning how we are going to have the SRC elections next semester”
University of Professional Studies, Accra has been without a substantive SRC administration for close to two academic years.
The current situation has made it difficult for students to voice out their concerns since some decisions by the management of the school were taken without consultation with any recognized student leadership body.
The most recent decision by management was to charge students at the University an amount of ¢200 for utility bills- A decision the acting student leaders deem inappropriate.
