The four days of persistent rains which started last Thursday in the Central region ended in flooding that has claimed the lives of five persons including an 8-year old girl.
In the wake of the floods, a man was electrocuted, three persons were killed after a building collapsed on them and another was washed away during the high level torrent. The rains were accompanied by strong winds, thunderstorms and lightning, leaving schools with no choice but to close down.
The unfortunate string of deaths first struck Amamoma, a community in cape coast near the University Of Cape Coast (UCC), where a man stepped on a live electricity cable that had fallen into flood waters unawares and was electrocuted immediately. The heavy rains by Saturday had weakened a building which eventually collapsed on two women and a little girl seated in front of the house at the time. This happened at Kwahenekrom.
In Atabadze on the same day, strong current flood waters dragged a man away as he attempted wading through the flood waters to safety. The rains subsided Monday morning leaving in its trail the destruction of properties and an abrupt halt in transport services.
However workers are still in a dilemma as to whether or not to go to work as many residents of several communities remain doubtful that the danger is over.
