Director of the Science Education Unit at the Ghana Education Service (GES), Mr. Andrew Quainoo has hinted of plans by the Ghana education service to set up Science resource centers at the Junior High level to improve upon the delivery of Science and Technology in the country. This according to him will help prepare the students adequately before progressing into second cycle institutions and help to reverse the downwards trends in the performance of students especially in Maths and Science.

He noted, ”the wealth of a nation depends greatly on the effectiveness of science and technology education. Ghana needs to tap into the skills and knowledge of its people by providing an inspiring science and maths education that develops the human resource required for the economic growth of the country and the personal development of individual as well as to ensure the competitiveness of the nation”.

Mr. Quainoo also revealed that government under the secondary education improvement project is assisting 125 less endowed senior high schools in the nation. He made this known in his keynote address at the opening ceremony of the 2016 National Science and Maths Quiz ongoing at the University of Ghana.

The 21st edition of the National Maths and Science Quiz is currently at the 1/8 stages with three schools qualifying to the quarter finals out of the expected 27.

Meanwhile the Immediate Past President of the Conference of Heads of Assisted Secondary School (CHASS), Mr. Samuel Ofori Adjei has bemoaned the downward decline of students participation in co-curriculum activities in Senior High Schools. He has however pledged CHASS’ continuous commitment in sponsoring the National Science and Maths Quiz.

”To think of education as what happens within the four walls of our classroom or a laboratory set up, then we are missing the point.”

Mr. Adjei further called on corporate Ghana to augments his outfit’s efforts in funding educational programs such as the National Science and Maths Quiz in the country.
