The Tema Metropolitan Health Directorate says it has adopted key strategies to promote and improve comprehension sexuality education in its jurisdiction.

Effective Community adolescent Health Clubs, effective school services, effective adolescent focused antenatal and constant and effective stakeholder engagement have resulted in reduced adolescent pregnancy, unsafe abortion, Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs)/HIV and AIDS and increased family planning acceptance rate.

Dr. John B.K.Yabani, Tema Metro Director of Health Services, disclosed this at the inauguration of the Adolescent Health Club of the Tema Metropolis at OLAM Senior High School in Tema.

The Club idea, which was conceptualized and being implemented by the Ghana Health Service in collaboration with the Ghana Education Service, would provide a formal setting for adolescents to appreciate and discuss primarily health issues that affect them in an informal and non judgemental way.

Mentors, peer educators, external advisors will seek to promote the adoption of healthy behaviours in adolescents.

Inaugurating the Club on the theme, “Healthy young people! Better future”, Dr Linda Vanotoo, Greater Accra Regional Director of Health Services, urged the members to spend more time on activities that impact positively on their health, intellect and spirituality.

She asked them to seek more knowledge about their sexual reproductive health as well as decency and ethics.

According to her, there is no easy path to fame and fortune adding, “We all need to work hard and diligently to develop our hearts and minds to contribute meaningfully to national development.”

She said the inauguration of the Club was timely considering the present dangers, pressures and opportunities enveloped in a sophisticated environment in which adolescents have to grow.
