Ashesi University College, is set to receive its Presidential Charter before the Close of the year 2016, This is according to the Deputy Minister of Education, In charge of tertiary Hon. Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa.
Speaking at the Ashesi University College’s 2016 Graduation Ceremony, He mentioned that, assessment reports by the National Accreditation board indicates that the Ashesi University College has met all the requirements to be a University on its own.
“I am so delighted to announce today that the interim assessment report that we have cited from the National Accreditation Board, points to one fact,” he said. “That fact, is that for a certainty, before the year 2016 ends, Ashesi University is going to receive its Presidential Charter! This is a feat worth celebrating.”
New Universities in Ghana, operate for a Minimum of 10 years, under the supervision of older Universities. The grant of a Presidential Charter to an institution signifies full autonomy for the institution, end of affiliation of the institution and the right to award degrees, diplomas and certificates, including honorary degrees, diplomas and certificates.
A Charter may be suspended or revoked by the President on the recommendation of the Board.
The Central University in the Greater Accra Region, recently also received its Presidential Charter after 17 years of mentorship under the University of Cape Coast.
Meanwhile, Founder and President of the Ashesi University College, Patrick Awuah Jnr in a facebook post also described the revelation by the Deputy Minister as “a Remarkable Milestone”

Ashesi’s Commencement Ceremony today was breathtaking, especially as the Deputy Minister of Education announced in his speech that Ashesi is set to receive a Presidential Charter and be given full independence before the end of 2016.
Under Ghana’s accreditation system, a Presidential Charter is recognition that a university has consistently met all quality requirements, and no longer needs to be supervised by an older university.
