There is a ‘mild war’ brewing in the University of Ghana Students’ Representative Council as the SRC President, Esinam Afi Seade has threatened to cause the arrest of her campaign manager, Jacob Shamatey and other key individuals who secured her victory in a keenly contested 2016 SRC elections.
It is not clear what might have caused the President to issue the threat but sources say the Campaign manager of ESIDOM, Mr. Shamatey is meddling in the day-to-day running of the Esinam led SRC administration; not only that but in the private life of Esinam.
However Mr. Shamatey took to social media to deny all the allegations leveled against him. According to him things are not going on right in the current SRC; barely two months after they assumed office.
He also lamented on the poor communication in Esinam’s administration. Mr. Shamatey recounted how he had to exert pressure on her to organize a press conference (FULL STATEMENT: UG-SRC OFFICIAL STANCE ON PAYMENT OF UTILITY BILLS) demanding government to rescind its decision to make students in tertiary institution pay utility bills starting from the 2016/2017 academic year.
“Communication in her administration is very poor. How many remember the GHc50 maintenance issue and the poor manner in which that issue was handled? The utility bill issue I had to use other means to mount pressure on her to organize the press conference. i needed to fix that before i can sit down.” Mr. Shamatey said.
In a rebuttal, Ms. Seade on social media accused her Manager and swore not to allow anyone lord over her including her campaign manager in running the affairs of the students’ body of the University of Ghana.
JACOB SHAMATEY STATEMENT ON THE BROUHAHA
I have tried soo hard to restrain myself on some of the issues been raised on the platform but the calls and messages I received are just amazing. It shows that members are really concerned.
I will touch on a few things and I close the docket on this matter once and for all.
I will segregate the issues for the purpose of clarity.
Out of the 14 JCR Presidents we have in LEGON, 9 were people I personally helped. Let anyone here pick a phone and call those JCR Presidents to find out whether I did interfered in their administration or decision making. I only advice them when they consult me. Beyond LEGON there are many people we have helped to win elections on various campuses. When I help u and u win, I am done. I don’t interfere.
However, in the case of ESINAM, I can’t sit down and fold my arms and watch. I tried it for about three weeks and I realised she was not yet at the point where I can just sit down.
Communication in her administration is very poor. How many remember the Ghc 50 maintenance issue and the poor manner in which that issue was handled? The utility bill issue I had to use other means to mount pressure on her to organize a press conference. I needed to fix that before I can sit down.
Expectations are High. Stakes are high. People are just sitting down to see her downfall/failure and we needed to prove them wrong. If her administration falls, fingers will be pointed at me in particular.
I lost many friendships that I built for many years just because of her elections. I stepped on many toes for her. I risked my life. I showed her determination and loyalty but today, ESINAM thinks I am fighting her because of disagreement.
What I did for her will not end there. Raising and grooming young leaders is actually my calling. Its a divine call. If things don’t go on well in her administration and tomorrow I groom someone else and present that person to students do u think they will take me serious?
The issue is not just about ESINAM or now. The issue goes beyond her. What we are doing, we are doing it for generations and not just now.
I personally made efforts so we amicably settle our differences but all failed. Enough is enough.
Who the hell does she think she is? SRC President my foot.
I have taken her as my blood sister and that still remains but I am done with her and her SRC administration. I will engage her in all other matters except for matters relating to the SRC matters.
There is a reason why an egg has a shell. Its for protection. If u break or take the shell of an egg off, the egg will last for only few days. After that few days the egg will spoil.
Some of us are like a ‘shell’ for your administration.
During the second semester of your administration you will understand the meaning of this statement.
There is nothing to mediate in this issue. Let her go her way and let me also go my way. My mind is made up.
End of Statement
With three weeks for school to resume many are calling on the two to bury the hatchet and forge ahead for the betterment of the students of the University of Ghana.
