Pay More Attention to Child Right Advocacy – Deputy Minister Tells Media – Radio Univers 105.7 | Voice of Legon

The deputy minister of employment and labor relations and Member of Parliament for Akwatia has charged the media to immensely engage itself in the advocacy of child rights in order to help curb the issue of child labor in Ghana. Hon. Baba Jamal, bemoaned the current situation where the content of mainstream or traditional media is occupied largely with political issues rather  hence giving little or no attention to issues such as the elimination of child labour in the country.

“One out of every 10 or every five is in some sort of child labor situation, it is very sad and I think this is where if you can reduce your attention on politics by 20% and shift it to child labor issues, it will be of good thing, because it is like all the concentration is on politics and a lot is missing out.”

He made these comments at the international press center where the media launch of this year’s celebration of world day against child labour took place. The theme for this year is ‘ END OF CHILD LABOUR IN SUPPLY CHAINS IN GHANA’.

The deputy minister also made a passionate appeal to all Ghanaians asking them to help protect the endangered life of young persons entangled in child labor acts in our communities by reporting the perpetrators so they face the wrath of the law.

“Indeed I am making this passionate appeal to you in view of our understanding that whatever abuse happens to any child anywhere is a human right issue which must be collectively addressed. The only way we can protect the children is to engage in stakeholders activities that frowns on human sufferings, deprivation forms all sort of social activities that suppresses, is dehumanizing and prevent children from attaining their full potential.”

The latest International Labour Organization estimates release in September revealed that the number of child labourers has declined by over one third since 2000 from 246 million to 168 million and the number of children in Hazardous work stand at 85 million down from 171 million in 2000.
