A faculty member at the University of Ghana escaped death when a giant mahogany tree crashed onto his white four wheel drive with registration number GE 3414-13 at the forecourt of Legon hall on Thursday afternoon.
Whereas the cause of the crash is immediately unclear, eye witness accounts indicate that the fall of the tree was initiated by the instability of the roots of the huge tree, following a fault the underground tanks had developed.
Univers news gathers that the underground tanks had developed leaks on Monday, leading to continuous outflow of water which had weakened the soil.
Speaking to Univers news’, the owner of the car Mr. Benjamin Bugri noted that it was an act of grace that had saved him from a probable unlikely death.
He explained that he had had need of visiting the cafeteria in Legon hall when he heard the sudden crash outside. The crash within minutes invited a number of students who trooped to the site to catch a glimpse of what would have otherwise been a gory sight involving the loss of the life of the driver. Traffic on campus was however not affected.
The huge mahogany tree had smashed the screen of the car, crumpling the bonnet in the process. The front wheels had subsequently deflated, whiles the doors of the car had been flattened by the pressure of the mahogany tree that rested on it. Onlookers report that there is the fear that other vehicles parked on the road could experience the same fate.
Meanwhile, the head of Legon security ACP Amadu Salifu Rtd. has expressed worry over the negligence of available parking slots on the University campus.
He noted that the accident could have been averted if the owner of the vehicle had used the demarcated parking arena instead of parking the car directly in front of the hall.
Efforts to speak to the deputy senior hall tutor of Legon hall Dr. Evans Aggrey Darko who was available at the scene was unsuccessful.
Mr. Bugri however expressed optimism over a possible replacement of the car by university management.
There are no reported casualties.
