UTAG Gives Government Two-Week Ultimatum – Radio Univers 105.7 | Voice of Legon

The University Teachers Association of Ghana has called on government to promptly lift the ban on recruitment of lecturers so to allow public universities the free hand to recruit as and when the need arises and also in accordance with the acts that established the universities.

According to the president of UTAG, Dr. Harry Agbanu, the ban on recruitment of lecturers into the various public universities in Ghana has been a concern of the association for so long a time. The association has sought the attention of the government on this matter without much success.

“it is regrettable to note that with all the numerous correspondences and other efforts, there has not been any direct response from Government to the issues UTAG has raised regarding the subject matter” Dr. Agbanu said.

Dr. Agbanu had earlier noted at a Press Conference, on February 10,2016, that the ban on recruitment poses a challenge to the smooth running of the universities and subsequently a letter dated February 12,2016 was sent to government seeking to appeal for the conditional lifting of the ban on recruitment.

Further, he said on March 4,2016 another letter was sent to remind the government that the subject of the ban on recruitment had not been addressed. The last letter prior to today’s press conference, was written to the ‘Vice-Chancellors Ghana’ and copied to the various stakeholders which reiterated the detrimental impact of government-control recruitment on serving faculty and the smooth operations of the universities.

He added that though government authorized the recruitment of some teacher or lecturers, the needed the number required has not been met and government should as a matter of urgency lift the ban before the new academic year commences.

He warned that if government does not heed to their call within a period of two weeks then the association will organize an emergency National Executive Committee meeting upon whose recommendations they will act. He opined that a withdrawal of service is a likely option.
