A Senior Lecturer at the University of Ghana School of Law, Dr. Kwadwo Appiagyei-Atua, who is also a Co-Petitioner for the removal of the Mohandas karamchand Gandhi’ Statue- highlighted that, the removal of the Statue will not cause a diplomatic row between Ghana and India because the action would be taken by the University and not the country.
There has been a uproar in the academic community of the University after the erection of the Mohandas karamchand Gandhi’ Statue at the Recreational Quadrangle of the University. Some lecturers of the University of Ghana including Professor Akosua Adomako Ampofo and Dr. Ọbádélé Kambon are not in agreement with the erection of the Statue on the campus due to Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi’s racist identity and also for the fact that there was no consultation from the university community members and other important stake holders before its erection.
Speaking on Campus Exclusive, Dr. Appiagyei- Atua said the University’s role is not to be in bed with government but to challenge ideas and conventional thoughts.
This is not between the government of Ghana and the government of India. This is a university and the university sometimes disagrees with the government because the university is a space for ideas. It is a space where we challenge orthodoxy and certain ideas that we think are conventional.
