The Chief Executive Officer of Quik Medical Consult, Mr. Benson Owusu Atuahene urge that exercising regularly, taking in a lot of fluids, consuming more fruits and vegetables, avoiding smoking and putting a stop to alcoholic drinks are few of the numerous ways of keeping a strong and healthy heart.
Speaking on the Radio Univers’ Good Health show, Mr. Benson Owusu Atuahene said the heart is the engine room of the body and needs to function properly.
He further stated that, people who experience pains in their heart should not hesitate seeking medical attention as early as possible.
“A healthy heart lives in healthy body. What must you do? Exercise regularly, eat more fruits and vegetables. Don’t just think about just eating the exotic ones: our own oranges, mangoes and let’s not forget our own ginger, it also helps improve the functioning of the body. Garlic, onions, they all play roles in the functioning of the heart as well. Let’s also drink a lot of water. If you develop diarrhea, make sure that you seek treatment for it because when you become dehydrated you put pressure on the heart”, he explained.
Mr. Owusu Atuahene added that to keep a healthy heart, one must reduce the intake of fatty foods since the fats in such foods fill the blood vessels (arteries and veins) thereby impeding the free flow of blood in the body. This he said can lead to overworking of the heart which can eventually cause the heart to enlarge(cardiomegaly).
In Ghana, the theme for this year’s world heart day celebration which falls on 29th September, 2016 is ‘power your heart’.
World Heart Day is the World Heart Federation’s biggest platform for raising awareness about cardiovascular diseases.
