Government has ordered the removal of the statue of former Indian Nationalist leader, Mohandas Karamachand Gandhi from the campus of the University of Ghana.
A statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, and sighted by Univers News intimated that whiles conceding the inherent flaws in the character of Mahatma Gandhi, there was the need to admit the evolution in his character and consequently refrain from engaging in acts that will hurt many individuals who saw an icon in Mahatma Gandhi.
“Whiles acknowledging that human he was, Mahatma Gandhi may have had his flaws, we must remember that people evolve. He inspired movements for civil rights and freedom across the world”, the statement read.
The statement further observed that in order to avoid the many adverse implications an attack on the statue could have on the relations between Ghana and India, there was the need to call for its relocation from the campus of the University of Ghana.
It observed that the propensity of creating disaffection between the two countries through the power of media interactions had impressed upon government, the need to call for its relocation and subsequently ensure its safety.
The Ministry further called on Ghanaians to side-step the errors of Gandhi’s remarks and acknowledge his roles in demonstrating the power of non-violent advocacies.
It will be recalled that Univers News reported of some damage that had been served the statue of Mahatma Gandhi by some unknown person(s). The spectacles on the statue had been removed, creating concerns over the entrenched resolve of some “pro-GandhiMustComeDown” campaigners to ensure the removal of the statue on the campus of the University of Ghana.
Management of the University are yet to indicate their decision on the matter.
