Reduce Stigma And Discrimination- UG Careers And Counselling Center – Radio Univers 105.7 | Voice of Legon

Mr. Nuworsa Kugbe , clinical psychologist at the careers and placement center at the University of Ghana bemoans the high rate of stigmatization and discrimination against persons living with mental illness.
this phenomenon is widespread in schools and institutions of learning as well as work places.

‘’There are people who are living with mental disorders ,they have been treated and they are back to work.Prominent people from the society have suffered from mental disorders before but they functioned., an example is Abraham Lincoln he suffered major depression but these are people who were able to make it and are prominent in life”, Mr. Kugbe said.

He added that this form of stigma causes shame, disfavour, and hopelessness and inhibits over half of those living with mental illness from seeking treatment.

”We should also choose our words so that we don’t stigmatise against persons living with mental disorder. One of the key reason for stigma around mental disorder is the kind of language we use to describe persons exhibiting symptoms of mental disorder”

According to Mr. Kugbe there is a need to have a holistic approach in finding long lasting solutions to this phenomenom in Ghana .
Against this background there have been several calls for individuals living with mental disorders to be integrated into our socities.
