UPSA Inaugruates New Law Faculty – Radio Univers 105.7 | Voice of Legon

Starting this October, students who wish to study Law both at the undergraduate and Masters level can apply to the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA) for tuition that will lead to the Award of a Bachelor of Laws  (LL.B)  and Master of Law (or LL.M.) respectively.

This is because the University, on Wednesday, inaugurated its Law faculty which is expected to admit over one hundred and fifty Students comprising of undergraduate and graduate students for the 2016/2017 academic year.

Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, the Vice Chancellor of the UPSA, Prof. Joshua Alabi intimated that the University of Professional Studies has over the years, produced cutting edge students due to the myriad research it conducts before designing it academic programs, and alluded that the law faculty was not going to be an exception to their academic excellence.

In his address, the founding Dean of the all-new UPSA Law faculty, Prof. Kwame Frimpong indicated that the move by the Professional University is an attempt to increase avenues to afford all students who wish to enter into the law profession, a fair opportunity to get trained.

The renowned lawyer trashed assertions that there are already superfluous lawyers in the country while asserting that the increasing population of the country requires that more lawyers be trained. He observed that there are just a few lawyers in the country who mostly prefer rendering their services in the capital to the disadvantage of people in other parts of the country.

“We rather have too few lawyers. When you have a country population of rough estimate twenty five million,… and you count at most nine to ten thousand lawyers, and out of these some are judges, magistrates, others are in corporation…so the real practicing lawyers may be four  , five thousand . And even if they are six thousand, they are all concentrated in Accra and a few other towns. What about the rest of the communities? Don’t they also deserve lawyers?” Prof Frimpong queried.

Prof. Kwame Frimpong further noted that, the inadequacy of practicing lawyers is the reason for the high cost of legal services in Ghana, and believed training more people to practice the law profession will introduce competition that will not only reduce the cost of legal service in the Country but also enhance the quality of legal service delivery.

Former minister of State and Consulting Director of UPSA’s Centre for Public Accountability, Dr. Kan- Dapaah who chaired the occasion said he was optimistic the University will produce good quality lawyers.

On his part, a member of the general legal counsel Rev. Prof. Ofori Amankwa affirmed the need for more lawyers, and underscored that the study of law “is going to enrich other disciplines”.  He described the move by the University as a step in the right direction.

The university of Professional Studies law faculty has already engaged ten instructors, and according to Prof. Kwame Frimpong, more faculty members will be recruited when the need arise. He stressed that they do not have any problem with human resource, contrary to calls by the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) for government to slash the number of students admitted into public tertiary institutions due to inadequate human resource capacity.

With the introduction of the Faculty of Law, UPSA now boast of four faculties, one institute and four Schools.
