Prior to every general election in Ghana, it has gradually become a norm that every political party comes out with a manifesto outlining countless goals they hope to accomplish when they assume the highest national office.
However, one of Ghana’s eminent lawyers, the retired Justice V.C.R.A.C Crabbe has bluntly trivialized the practice, stating that it is needless for political parties to constantly draw up manifestos meant to guide their government, when voted into power.
Speaking on Radio Univers‘ political analysis program, State Of The Campaign on Monday, Justice Crabbe stated that manifestos are needless when the constitution is available.
According to him, the constitution which is the highest law of the country contains principles on issues of myriads of textures and should be the ultimate governing tool. Consequently, instead of always coming up with manifestos, if every governing party governs and serves the people using the constitution, there will be uniformity and continuity in oneness of purpose – nation building.
“Of course not everything can be put in the constituion and therefore, if we understand the nature of what the constitution should be, there are certain areas that sheer common sense should guide us… The principles are in there (in the constitution). So what do we need manifestos for? We must read and understand the constitution. “
In a related development, Justice Crabbe cautioned players of Ghana’s political landscape to learn to compromise and “strike that balance in our political dialogue” instead of subscribing to the politicization of every issue which is only a disservice to the entire nation.
“If we cannot have compromise in our politics, then all the talk we have about democracy will be mere hot air, it wouldn’t amount to much. I think we need to strike that balance in our political dialogue.”
He also noted once upon a time when parliament was without partisan politics but representative of the national interest.
Justice Crabbe was one of the formulators of the 1960 Constitution of the Republic of Ghana and has helped several countries in drafting their constitutions.
