EC Filing Fees Are Unreasonable- CPP – Radio Univers 105.7 | Voice of Legon

The Director of Elections of the Convention People’s Party, Kwabena Bomfeh has expressed fury over the price hikes from the electoral commission for presidential and parliamentary candidates in this year’s election. Mr. Bomfeh observed that the electoral commission had acted in bad faith and proved itself indifferent to the plight of Ghanaians. In an exclusive interview with Univers News, the Director of Elections noted that current economic conditions created difficulties in raising the full amount for all parliamentary candidates the party had to present. He further accused the electoral commission of a deliberate attempt to sideline the similar parties.

“CPP is opposed to the high price fee hikes that the electoral commission has put out. We feel that they are not sensitive to the plight of the Ghanaian considering the economic situation we find ourselves in. And more importantly if you look at the percentage increase in both the presidential and parliamentary fees, compared to what was paid in 2012… its unthinkable, unreasonable, in fact wicked if not insensitive. We believe that something ought to be done about it because it is almost as though the electoral commission lead by Mrs. Charlotte Osei is selling our democracy”, he said.

He further indicated that the unanimous concerns being raised by all other political parties was proof of enough of the prospects of success the clarion call against the price hikes could chalk. He noted that the CPP was taking first steps in raising concerns over the discomfort with the price adding that subsequent moves will be made. He called on stakeholders to assist in booting the demands of the electoral commission in order to jointly promote the country’s democracy.

“It is a deliberate attempt to discourage or disenfranchise people of a certain low economic standing from engaging in politics or seeking to be elected into office of parliament or president in the country. It is bad enough and we have to condemn it. What we are doing about it is part of this protestation, we are raising it high and calling on Ghanaians to see light in what we are saying. But we are particularly happy that almost all the other political parties that were at IPAC have issues with the fees. “ he added.

Presidential candidates are to pay GHC50,000 as filing fee which is 500 percent increment and GHC10,000 as against the Gh¢1,000 paid in the last elections or Parliamentary candidates.
