Music Lecturer at the University of Ghana, Professor Edmund John Collins has jumped in the debate on the aptness of musicians openly supporting political candidates and parties.
According to him, there has been a long tradition of musicians actively involved in Politics in Ghana, a situation he claims is not alien to our society.
He opined that the move by artistes is nothing strange adding that many artiste have backed political candidates or their ideologies in the past.
Speaking on Behind the Headlines , the Professor noted that musicians who openly support political parties stood a risk of losing their followers as they could be against their choice of candidates.
“Everybody has a democratic right to vote for one political party and has the right to express his views and line –up with one of the political parties . The only danger I will say for musicians is that if a party they support openly falls they may lose some of their franbase”,he added.
He made these comments on the background of Highlife musician Lucky Mensah’s decision to sever ties with the governing National Democratic Congress and campaign for the opposition New Patriotic Party ahead of this year’s elections.
Lucky Mensah, real name Alex Mensah made a new song titled ‘‘Ye Se Sa Mu’ which endorses the New Patriotic Party’s Presidential candidate, Nana Akufo Addo as the only hope for Ghanaians.
