Mr. Gregory Asiedu has today Friday September 9,2016 been appointed by Ms. Esinam Afi Seade as Chief Justice of the University of Ghana SRC for the 2016/2017 academic year.
His appointment was based on chapter seven (7), clause two (2) of the SRC constitution which state that the Chairperson of the Judicial Board shall be appointed by the Executive Officers acting on the advice of other members of the Executive Committee, subject to the approval of the General Assembly (GA)…
But the SRC President, Esinam Afi Seade failed to seek the approval of General Assembly before swearing in Mr. Asiedu as the CJ of the SRC at the First General Assembly sitting for the 2016/2017 academic year.
Embattled 2016 SRC Presidential aspirant, Mr. Eugene Agyei then filed a motion challenging Esinam’s decision of swearing into office Mr. Asiedu; who also administer the oath of office for the elected Speaker of the house without the approval of the highest decision making body of the Students’ Representative Council. Mr. Agyei pleaded to the house to make sure the right thing is down to prevent setting a bad precedence for subsequent generation. Failure for the house to uphold his plea will lead to what he describes as constitutional anarchy.
In a counter motion SRC President of the Accra City, Mr. Emmanuel Abeka also argued that the SRC President in consultation with the Executive Committee endorsed the CJ’s appointment and that no member of the General Assembly raised objections at the point when the Chief Justice was being sworn-in. He stated that the silence of members of the General Assembly during the proceedings meant approval of the President’s appointment.
At the end of the debate the G.A dismissed the motion challenging the swearing in of the Mr. Gregory Asiedu as Chief Justice.
Mr. Asiedu is a level 400 law student of the University and a resident of the Akuafo Hall. Prior to his appointment; he was the Chief Justice of the Junior Common Room (JCR) of his hall; a position he has held for two years now. In his capacity as the Chairperson of the Akuafo Hall Judicial Board; he spearheaded the drafting of the Hall’s first JCR Constitution.
The new CJ comes to the table with rich legal experience as he has also served on the University of Ghana SRC Judicial Board for two years.
