The Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection today launched a policy on Justice for Children at the Accra International Conference Center. The policy is expected to take care of child witnesses, abused children, child offenders, and children who come into contact with law and civil matters.
The policy is also expected to empower a legal support unit that will go after parents who flout the rules in caring for their children.
The policy was approved by the Cabinet together with two other policies developed by the Ministry.
Speaking at the launch, the Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection, Honorable Nana Oye Lithur, mentioned that the policy is to help promote rights of children in the country.
“Even though children come into contact with the law in various ways there is no policy to stipulate how these children should be handled, on this note I call on us all to work together to implement these policies”, she explained.
Mrs. Susan Namondo Ngongi a UNICEF representative who delivered a solidarity message noted that the policy is not only about children violating the law but make the connection between care and protection very clear.
“The goal of the justice for children approach is to ensure that children, defined by the Convention on the Rights of the Child as all persons under the age of eighteen, are better served and protected by justice systems, including the security and social welfare sectors. It specifically aims at ensuring full application of international norms and standards for all children who come into contact with justice and related systems as victims, witnesses and alleged offenders; or for other reasons where judicial, state administrative or non-state adjudicatory intervention is needed, for example regarding their care, custody or protection,’’ Mrs. Susan further stated.
This makes the number of policies developed by the Ministry and approved by the cabinet in 2015 to five.
