After several years of gold medal drought, the Akuafo hall female team emerged winners of the 53rd University of Ghana inter-hall cross-country competition.
The competition which came off on Friday (October 7, 2016) at the Athletics Oval saw the Akuafo Hall (farmers) coming tops with a total of 50 points whiles their closest contenders, Volta and Mensah Sarbah halls placed 2nd and 3rd respectively.
Other halls that competed in the 8 km race included Jean Nelson Aka hall; Legon hall and debutante City Campus.
Akuafo athlete Joycelyn Assafuah set the pace for her team mates by coming third on the individual with a time of 37 minutes 50.52 seconds and was followed by Cynthia Anafa who came fifth with a time of 39 minutes 26.40 seconds.
Adding to the hall’s tally was Adwoa Patience who ran a time of 40 minutes 23.27 closely followed by team mate Sandra Konadu Assibuo formerly of Jean Aka Nelson who also came 8th with a time of 40 minutes 38.56 seconds.
The Farmers were set for gold when Clemency Asantewaa completed her race with a time of 42 minutes 48.47 seconds.
Captain of the Akaufo hall Ernestina Asiamah Agyei was close to shedding tears of excitement as this was the first time her team was winning the 8 km race since her admission to the University of Ghana.
