In less than a week, the University of Ghana has recorded two violent student-clashes. As it stands, the biggest security threats facing the University isn’t one of external violence or invasion but the acts of some violent and unscrupulous people of the university community.
The issue of security on campus is worrying, one which the University management and the SRC do not seem to have answers in sight.
Perhaps it would be unfair to blame the University’s private security team for the lack of swiftness in responding to violent break outs.
Pay the slightest attention and you would notice the sorry state of the conditions of service of these security personnel.
Sincerely I would say, that these men and women try their best by putting their lives on the line every time – even in their tattered uniforms and their pale self.
It’s not their fault they have been reduced to just seizing unaccredited cameras during matriculation ceremonies and the wares of vendors on campus, they’re mostly lacking where they are needed.
Saturday 8th October saw one of the worst student clashes in recent times. You may have heard of the clashes that greeted the 2016 University of Ghana Matriculation ceremony where a vehicle was set ablaze and another was badly damaged. Had it not been for the timely intervention of the Ghana Police Service and the Fire Service, the headlines would have been different.
Saturday 15th October, just a week later, it wasn’t vehicles that were destroyed but building structures. It was a fight between some Commonwealth hall boys and some Akuafo Hall boys. The violence saw several louvre blades,banners and other political posters and flags burnt. In fact, humans (Students) were targeted as well. People pelted stones at one another yet, our campus security stood helpless (but can you really blame them?)
Maybe it would take a bloodier and more compelling violence to cause the University management and all of us decide to wake up to this worrying trend.
Long before the cars were damaged, those students would fearlessly throw stones at each other without caution, and upon realizing it is possible to damage cars and buildings and go scot free, a refrain is not expected anytime soon.
Drastic measures are needed. The earlier the University acts, the better!
We shouldn’t wait for blood to be spilled before we act; these attacks by students on fellow students are primitive and have no place in 2016.
The reactionary approach to solving problems aren’t entirely useful and there need to change it. It’s reckless and ineffective.
A student should not lose his or her life as a result of students’ violence on campus before we put in place the right measures. It’s a collective effort we must all be part of.
To our SRC reps, I personally feel this is an opportunity to become relevant again- let student feel you are guarding their interests by protecting them.
Going forward, we need a permanent Police patrol team on the University of Ghana campus. Anyone who has witnessed any of such students fight would tell you how the presence of the police on campus helps neutralize the chaos.
To all those who see their friends and sometimes course mates as enemies in the name of “Hall tradition”, it isn’t too late to wise up.
