UHAS Team Wins Volunteerism Competition – Radio Univers 105.7 | Voice of Legon

The 2016 edition of the Community and Volunteerism Service competition organized by the Osei Kusi Foundation in Collaboration with the Selfless for Africa organization has successfully ended with Team ‘Embak’ of the University of Health and Allied Sciences emerging as winners.

The Community and Volunteerism Service competition is an annual competition that seeks to bring students from various Universities in the country together to identify problems in societies and to develop innovative projects that will help solve the problem. The competition is one that comes along with a cash prize of GH₵10,000 for winners to use as startup capital to execute their projects.

This year’s Competition witnessed 96 teams applying to take part of the competition. Out of these 96 applicants six teams from six different universities were selected to participate in the finals of the project.

The teams included Initiative for Community development from the University of Cape Coast, Life Changers from the Valley View University, Embak from the University of Health and Allied Sciences, Youth Empowerment Society from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Team Inspya from the University of Ghana and Team Mariners from the Regional Maritime University.

The grand finale of the 2016 edition of the competition was made up of two separate sessions. The first session saw all teams presenting their project for a maximum of five minutes and the second session comprised of a presentation from three teams who qualified out of the six teams per their performance in the first presentation. With the second session, the three teams gave a further one minute presentation on their project out of which the eventual leader was chosen from.

After the first session of the competition, Team ‘Inspya’ together with team Embak and youth Empowerment Society were the teams to qualify to participate for the grand session of the competition. Team Embak finally emerged as winners by securing 60 points out of the 72 total points while teams Inspya and Youth Empowerment Society securing 56 and 52 points respectively.

The main objective of Team Embark is to provide safe drinking water for the people of Duta in the Volta region of Ghana who are facing water problems. The team seeks to construct boreholes and educate the people on how to keep their drinking water safe from pollution.
