The central Students’ Representative Council of the University for Development Studies (UDS), have justified its acquisition of four new buses for the various campuses.
The student leadership have come under serious criticism and pressure from the student populace over what they believe is an act of misplaced priority after it procured the Nissan Civilian buses at a cost 1.3 million Ghana Cedis.
According to the President of the central UDS SRC, Cletus Chikpa, the council took the decision to purchase the buses after noting the difficulties students faced in commuting from their respective campuses to other parts of the town.
In an interview on Campus Exclusive, he noted that the procurement was facilitated by a sponsorship from Prudential Bank Limited.
He noted that the buses will be distributed to the each campus of the University in Tamale, Navrongo, Wa and Nyankpala.
Responding to criticisms that the SRC kept poor records of its activities, Mr. Chikpa said the previous administration had duly handed over the up-to-date record to his administration and all subsequent records by his administration are duly being documented for successive administrations.
He also denied claims the SRC did not have an effectively running secretariat to operate from.
“It is a communique or somebody’s opinion but it is a wild allegation. The SRC is decentralised and our day-to-day activities at the campus level is handled by the executives at the campus level of the various campuses.’We have offices in each of the universities. These offices might not be fit to be called a Secretariat but these structures exist. No one operates from hotels or rooms. It is just a wild allegation.”
