UTAG Advises Universities’ Management To Cut Down On Admission Intake – Radio Univers 105.7 | Voice of Legon

The University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) has advised management of the various public Universities to curtail admissions to levels befitting capacities and resources available to lecturers in order to ensure an enabling and efficient teaching and learning environment.

This advocacy comes on the heels of a recently revoked ban instituted by government, which prohibited the 10 public Universities from recruiting personnel, including lecturers.

Speaking on Radio Univers‘ morning show, Campus Exclusive, the UTAG president, Dr. Harry Agbanu stated that government’s focus should be creating an enabling environment that will motivate lecturers to give their utmost best, instead of cutting down the number of lecturers.

According to Dr. Harry Agbanu, the current conditions are not favorable for lecturers and yet they pull their weight to place the Universities on the right path regarding academic work, adding that since government has disregarded requests for the recruitment of more lecturers, management of the various Universities should only admit numbers that can adequately be handled by the available lecturers.

“Unfortunately that is what it will mean but it is not our intention to deny anyone access to tertiary education. That is why we are saying that a lot more lecturers should be recruited so all qualifying students will also have a chance to access tertiary education.”
