The Hall Master of the twin-hall, International Students’ Hostel (ISH) and Jubilee hall of the University of Ghana, Dr. Patrick Asamoah Sekyi has debunked allegations of discriminating between foreign resident students and their Ghanaian counterparts.
According to Dr. Sekyi the level of privacy enjoyed by residents at the ISH continues to attract more Ghanaian students to be accommodated at the hostel that was originally built for only foreign students studying at the University of Ghana but had take-in limited number of local students so that the foreign students would not feel isolated.
“The hostel was originally meant for international students, however it was later realized that these international students felt isolated to some extent because when they come here; they are not only coming for academic purposes but they also want to mingle and learn our culture, tradition and so on. So they prefer to share or pair with Ghanaians or other Africans and for these reasons it was decided that some percentage should be given to Ghanaians” the Hall Master of ISH said.
Dr. Sekyi said the surge in the number of Ghanaians wanting to live at ISH has compelled the Hall management and the International Programme Office (IPO) to put in place some criteria to reduce the numbers.
He said to qualify to be in the international Hostel; one must be in level 400 and must have a Grade Point Average (GPA) of 3.0.
“But we were also thinking that if we limit it to level four hundred students; at least in their final year so that they will have that privacy to concentrate on their studies devoid of noise and other disturbances that may have risen if they were in four-in-one room.” He explained.
In recent times Ghanaian students have accused the managers of the hall for giving preferential treatment to foreign students at their expense. And with general deficit in residential facility on the University campus, non-residential students turn to spread their tentacles by applying to all the halls including ISH for accommodation. Some also complained of the porters in the hall for been hostile to them; a claim Dr. Sekyi refuted.
“No that is not true, that is totally false, the rule in ISH is that visitors have to sign because we are hosting our brothers and sisters outside Ghana and we have provided some level of security to them, so once visitors sign in, indicating where they want to go they will be allowed because there are also shops and cafeterias inside the hostel.” he rejected.
He further added that for this academic year there is no Ghanaian continuing student whose name has been taken off the accommodation list unless the student has violated some of the rules and regulations governing the hall some of which are smoking, drinking and among others
Every student of the University of Ghana being it a Ghanaian student or foreign student is thereby advised to desist from explicit behaviour that will pose a problem to him or her or the university.
