Some students of the University of Ghana have been left frustrated as they cannot register for residence online for the 2016/2017 academic year which begins today; August 17, 2016.
This morning scores of the students lined up in front of the Students Account Office (SAO) for their problem to be rectified.
According to them they have paid the required percentage of the academic and residential user fees weeks ago but have not been granted permission by the University to complete their online registration.
In the past, the university had residential policy where accommodation was available for only fresh students, but that system was abolished in 2009 following the completion of the new halls namely the Jean Nelson, Prof. Kwapong, Hilla Liman and Elizabeth Sey.
Under the current system, students who secure accommodation in the first year will continue to be in the hall for the four-year university programme unless they want to change their halls or to be non-resident.
The affected students say they have being residents for more than a year and see no reason why they have not yet been granted access to register.
An official at the SAO who spoke to Univers news on condition of anonymity said continuing students of certain halls were required to put down their details with the hall management if they desire to be accommodated for the 2016/2017 academic year of which some failed to comply. This he said had led the denial of the students to register for their residence.
He also said the problem is partly due the University of Ghana Computing System’s (UGCS) failure to upload all the names of students into the system before the resumption of school today.
With lectures beginning next week Monday August 22, 2016, many students are calling on the University authority to rectify all the problems with the registration process to avert any circumstances that may jeopardize their studies for the academic year.
