The Coalition for Youth Development (COYDEV), Ghana has issued a petition to impeach all elected Assembly members of Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) if they fail to elect a presiding member for the 9th time.
The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) has for the ninth time failed to elect a presiding member for the assembly. Neither of the two candidates who stood for the election was able to get the required two thirds majorities needed to get the nod to become presiding member.
After elections on Tuesday, Mr. Abraham Boadi polled 69 votes while Mr. Michael Adusei Bonsu had 50 votes. The stalemate forced the acting Chairman of the assembly, Michael Ataogye, who is the Coordinating Director, to call for a 30-minute break to allow for more consultation.
However, after two hours of consultation, the assembly failed to reach a compromise.
The meeting was consequently adjourned until further notice.
The Ashanti Regional Minister, Mr. John Alexander Ackon, expressed his disappointment at the inability of the assembly to elect a PM.
“The stakeholders had done much consultation and I had hoped that the assembly would successfully elect a PM”, Mr. Ackon said.
However, a different picture emerged, as the assembly, for the ninth time, failed to elect a PM.
Mr Ackon said the entrenched position taken by both sides was not helping matters and would make it difficult for a candidate to secure two-thirds of the votes of the assembly members.
Since October 6 2015 the assembly has failed to elect a presiding member. It has so far held six meetings and nine elections all at no avail. According to COYDEV an assembly without a presiding member means that all assemblies in KMA are non -functional.
“Even on this last attempt if they fail to elect a presiding member, per the local government Act No functional presiding members can be petitioned by the electoral commission to declare those positions vacant.”
The executive coordinator of COYDEV Mr. Mensah Thompson further hinted. They have therefore petitioned the electoral commission to declare all the seats vacant for a reelection of presiding members.
