Higher Education Requires A Solid Framework- EU Ambassador To Ghana – Radio Univers 105.7 | Voice of Legon

European Union Ambassador to Ghana, His Excellency William Hanna has said that Europe’s 2020 education and Training policy areas will make concrete contribution towards the implementation of the education sustainable development goal. The ambassador made this statement at the third General Meeting of the Tuning Africa Phase Two Agenda here in Accra this morning.

He also highlighted that Africa’s Continental Education Strategy for 2016 to 2025 has ‘many similar targets to Europe’s, and reiterated the Union’s mutual interest to collaborate and share their experiences in an attempt harmonize higher education on the Continents’. Mr. Hanna also expressed his support for the development of the Pan African Framework for Quality assurance and Accreditation in the next three years.

He further opined that ‘higher education requires a solid framework which builds on institutional, national and regional specificities and at the same time provides a common language and understanding for each other’s systems to build up mutual trust and transparency’.

Speaking to Univers News, Pro Vice Chancellor here at the University of Ghana, Professor Samuel Kwame Offei who was at the event, asserted that efforts at standardizing the course credit systems in African Universities shall be at the heart of the three-day discussion.

“We are looking at course credit systems, variations among that, and trying to see the how we can standardize all of them and even the quality assurance of the various programs. We are trying to see how we can harmonize them so that we will all be on the same page as far as programs are concerned”, he said.

The Minister for Education Professor Jane Naana Opoku Agyeman, in an address read on her behalf lauded Sub-Saharan Africa’s massive expansion in the higher education sector over the past two decades. She also reiterated the need for Africa to ‘produce future leaders who will promote better governance and management in all sectors and facilitate innovative solutions to society’s problems’.

The conference is organized by the African Union Commission, the Association of African Universities in conjunction with the University of Ghana and the European Union.
