The Public Relations Officer of the Ministry of Education, Mr. Francis Gbadago has stated that the free boarding system is to cover over 120000 students in the country.
Speaking on Campus Exclusive on Wednesday, Mr. Gbadago explained that this policy as part of the constitutional mandate for education sector seeks to encapsulate boarding students with financial inadequacies and challenges. This he said will enable the average Ghanaian student to maximize all opportunities that come along with second cycle education.
“We are looking at students who are from poor backgrounds, who will actually need this particular policy to benefit them most. They are the very people we are targeting. We want to ensure they take active part in everything that goes on at the second cycle level. It does not necessarily mean that their colleagues who are within the day student category, but this time around government thinks that it is appropriate that they extend the policy to cover some 120,000 students who are also in the boarding systems. We are emphasizing that indeed it must be students who are coming from poor backgrounds so that effects will be clearly noticed”, he said.
The Public Relations Officer further stated that the ministry will put in place measures to identify students who meet the criterion for subscription to this policy.
“They will have to sit down and investigate their background clearly and then identify whether they deserve to benefit from this particular policy or not. Over the years we’ve been doing that and I don’t that its going to be different at all”, he added.
