University Debate Societies Must Deliberate On National Issues – Justice V.C.R.A.C Crabbe – Radio Univers 105.7 | Voice of Legon

Justice V.C.R.A.C Crabbe has charged debate societies in the tertiary institutions across Ghana to include in their debates, topical national issues.

According the retired Supreme Court judge, tertiary institutions are crucial to national development and therefore, tertiary students must fully exploit this strategic position to bring about positive change in the country.

Justice Crabbe  reminded tertiary students, especially the debate societies in the various tertiary institutions that their voice constitutes public opinion which government will very likely heed to if it is strong. Subsequently, he urged the debate societies to take up controversial national issues and continuously debate, deliberate on it and come up with solutions till government hears them out.

He further expressed his sadness at the current dormancy of the university community in Ghana, lamenting the vibrancy that once existed in the universities is now next to absent.

In his view, even if the entire nation is silent and there is no public opinion, the Universities must be a regulatory force that keeps government on its toes and a force that can be reckoned with towards nation building.

Regrettably, this is currently at all not the case.

“There was a time when literate societies in this country held public debates and people’s opinions were heard but I do not think we have that anymore. Why? I will be much interested in the debating societies in our Universities taking on controversial national issues and making their voice heard.”

The retired lawyer was speaking on State Of The Campaign, a political analysis program on Radio Univers.
