The Vice Chancellor of the University of Ghana has hinted on plans of management to rebuild the arch on the Okponglo- George Benneh circle stretch of road which leads to the main campus of the University of Ghana.
This according to the Vice Chancellor, Professor Ebenezer Oduro Owusu will serve as a security post to help combat security challenges on campus and not for toll collection.
It may be recalled that the university in 2014 under the immediate past VC, Professor Ernest Aryeetey, constructed a toll booth on the same stretch of road now called the “Academic Freedom Road” to raise funds to recoup a loan it took to fix its roads as well as discourage the use of campus roads by motorists.
The structure was subsequently demolished by National Security operatives who cited the facility as a security threat and also causing inconveniences to motorists who ply the road.
But in his maiden report at the 2016 congregation ceremony held at the University of Ghana, the Vice Chancellor, Professor Oduro Owusu stressed on the fact that the Arch when completed will serve as a security check point and not for tolls.
“…As you drive through the Okponglo entrance to our beautiful campus, you will notice that the road has been named Academic Freedom road. Very soon, the arch which is under construction will be completed to create the Academic Freedom Arch. Let me emphasize that the arch is to serve purely as a security post and not as a toll booth!” the VC said.
The VC also said the University has recently put together a strategic document to combat security challenges on our campus but a major constraint which still remain is the inadequate security personnel on campus.
He further added that management of the University is working assiduously to find avenues to improve the current staffing situation and sensitization programs for students on the need to be security conscious.
Meanwhile some students who spoke to Univers news said it is a step in the right direction as crime cases on the now academic freedom keep increasing.
