Employ Innovative Ways To Revive Agriculture- Economist Tells Government – Radio Univers 105.7 | Voice of Legon

Agricultural economist at the university of Ghana prof. Daniel Sarpong has expressed worry over the performance and fortunes of the agricultural sector of Ghana. He bemoaned what he described as a neglect of relevant structures and sectors that are crucial to the growth of the sector in Ghana particularly ‘mainstream farming’.

“If the cocoa farmer goes to the Bank, he can borrow money at the beginning of the season to let his way through the cocoa season and pay at the end of the harvest season because there is a ready market for cocoa out there, now this is the kind of structure we do not have for the rest of the agricultural sector”

In an interview with Univers Business, Professor Sarpong stated that marketing and processing structures of the agriculture sectors are very crucial areas that must be given the needed attention. This he believes will substantially reduce the huge post-harvest loses estimated on the average to be about 30%.

Meanwhile Professor Sarpong urged players and policy makers in the sector to explore innovative means of boosting agricultural production as a way of dealing with the sector’s declining growth. He suggested the introduction of modern and effective methods of enhancing production.

“Of course they are challenges, but I think we should put our hands together and then try to see whether we can address the challenges and what we can do most often is to adapt and adjust the to the changes in climate and these are some of the areas policy makers need to explore”

Agriculture in Ghana consist of a variety of agricultural products and is an established economic sector which has over the period provided employment on a formal and informal basis however the sector that employs some 44.7% of the population has seen a continuous decline in its yearly output over the past 6 years.
