READ: Before You Dispose Of Your Old Phone – Radio Univers 105.7 | Voice of Legon

Too many people simply dispose of their older mobile devices with little thought on just how much personal data their devices have accumulated.

Your smartphone, tablets and other mobile devices store your personal and work related information. These may include your banking information, work related contracts, or information which when accessed by unauthorised personnel can bring some discomfort to the individual. When these devices are obsolete, or no longer needed, they should be disposed off with care.

You are most likely to dispose off your device by donating it, giving them to someone as a gift, reselling, or throwing it away. Before you dispose off your device, you need to erase all your information on the device. Simply, hitting the delete button does not completely wipe your data. It can be recovered with ease by whoever ends up with your mobile device.

Below are the steps you can follow to securely erase your information:-

Apple iOS Devices: Settings | General | Reset | Erase All Content and Settings
Android Devices: Settings | Privacy | Factory Data Reset
Windows Phones: Settings | About | Reset Your Phone

  1. Use the factory reset. This is also called a hard reset. This will wipe your device and clear nearly all the information in its memory and return it to the condition it was in when you first bought it.
The factory reset function varies among devices; listed are the steps for the three most popular devices:
  1. Remove or erase SIM and SD cards. Remove them from your device and STORE THEM IN A SAFE PLACE. They can be reused.
