Workers of the electricity company of Ghana across the country have from Tuesday morning suspended all official work in protest against government’s decision to privatize the company.
This comes after a directive was issued from the camp of the Public Utilities Workers Union to vent out grievances against the decision. Speaking exclusively to Univers news on Friday, General Secretary of the union Mr. Michael Nyantakyi noted that the decision came as a result of what he describes as an act of betrayal on the part of the relevant stakeholders.
According to him his outfit was assured of negotiations to heed to their plea yet the Ministry of Power and other stakeholders has gone ahead to request for proposals from private bidders.
“We consider as an act of betrayal and defection on the part of ministry of power and MIDA because we met with them on Tuesday and agreed that we will meet again on the 8th of September to discuss the issue. Unfortunately they went behind us and on the 31st [August] they issued a request for proposal to the prospective donors and we felt that this is not in the right direction once we have agreed to meet and discuss the issues”, he said.
Mr. Nyantakyi has also called government to address the major challenges of bad leadership and political interference plaguing the company.
“The core challenge facing the ECG currently is an issue bothering on leadership and governance as we’ll as well as the extent of political interference. If you give it to a private entity and in this arrangement where almost all the prospective bidders or new partners are foreign companies, at the end of the day we are just selling or giving out vital national assets to foreign interest. Whatever profit they will get out of this arrangement, they will take out of our country”, he added.
The Public Utilities Workers Union embarked on a three-day nationwide demonstration to protest the privatization of the ECG.
