The Head of the Social Work Department at the University of Ghana, Dr. Mavis Dako-Gyeke has encouraged the academic community to employ all-inclusiveness in the teaching of students with physical disability.
Speaking at a Faculty Interaction Day organized by the University of Ghana Computing Systems in collaboration with the Office of Students with Disability, Dr. Gyeke explained that lecturers and colleagues should exhibit respect towards students with special needs in our lecture halls to avoid stigmatization and ensure equal level of assimilation of lessons.
She further emphasized the need to refrain from certain category of discriminatory vocabulary used in addressing these individuals which go a long way to negatively affect their demeanor.
“For person with disability there are some challenges that they need accommodation with, not just by lecturers but by students so their colleagues in the classroom as well as those of us teaching need to make few changes to be able to accommodate them… A lot of labels that we use might be stigmatizing or very discriminatory so then it conveys the idea that those with special needs are not as capable as the other students in our class. As students and lecturers, we have to be very careful in terms of the language that we use.”
Also in her submission, Dr. Gyeke underscored that students with with disability are similarly entitled to access all resources available on the university campus. The senior lecturer admonished students with special needs to request for these services through the appropriate channels such as the Office of Students with disability to guarantee their maximization of these facilities.
“Normally when the students come to the university, it is their responsibility to request for services because as lecturers in the class we might not know the disabilities they have… especially when they come in the first year. They should bring us documentation to prove that they have a disability, then when it goes to Dr. Asiedu [co-ordinator of Office of Students with special needs] she will also have a basis to say that this student needs that or that.”
She finally called on lecturers to demonstrate confidentiality when students open up to them about their disabilities.
