University of Ghana Distance Education Holds Maiden Career Workshop For Final Year Students – Radio Univers 105.7 | Voice of Legon

The Distance Education Unit of the University of Ghana in partnership with the Counselling and Placement has held its maiden career workshop for all of its level 400 students.

Addressing the final year students at the workshop, the student service coordinator Dr. Jemima Anderson said the 3 day career workshop, was geared towards sharpening  the critical skills of the will be graduates to enhance their performance in the world of work.

Dr. Anderson revealed that she was elated the Distance Unit was finally able to organize its maiden workshop for distance education final year students since this happens for regular students annually. She was however confident of the lasting impact the program will have on the career aspirations of all participants and assured them that the program will be sustained in the coming years.

Day 1 of the workshop saw participants benefiting immensely from the insightful talk of Mr. Alex Wiafe on the job market. Mr. Wiafe further enlightened participants on the differences in job, work and career.

According to him, work is anything one expends effort or faculty to do while a job is anything that gives one a specific role, function or identity. He explained careers as “occupation or employment by which a person earns income from a specific training”. He therefore encouraged participants to plan their careers while they pursue jobs saying “the world of work has jobs but people have careers”.

Participants were caught up when Director of the University of Ghana Counselling Center,  Mrs. Jocelene Buckman finally took them through her presentation touching on key areas such as why brand yourself, how to brand yourself, communicating your skills, attitudes, dependability, teamwork, initiative and flexibility. She ended by cautioning participants that no one owes them a career hence they should “use every opportunity to show others what you can do for their business”.

Dean of the School of Continuing and Distance Education,  at the University of Ghana Prof. Oheneba Sakyi also called on the students to brand themselves well enough for the job market.
